Pharmacological action of Plendil

Plendil is a medication with antihypertensive and antianginal effects. The active substance (felodipine) is used to treat hypertension and stable angina.

Felodipine lowers blood pressure by reducing the total peripheral vascular resistance (especially in the arterioles). Felodipine relaxes airway smooth muscles. It has no significant effect on the concentration of lipids in the blood.

Felodipine may also be administered to patients with reduced left ventricular function, asthma, diabetes, gout, or hyperlipidemia.

Plendil effectively lowers blood pressure in hypertensive patients. Felodipine treatment may result in regression of left ventricular hypertrophy. The drug has natriuretic and diuretic effect. Felodipine reduces renal vascular resistance and increases blood flow to the kidneys. Felodipine therapy leads to improved myocardial perfusion due to dilatation of the coronary vessels. It also helps eliminate the spasm of coronary vessels.

Plendil may be used for the treatment of hypertension alone or in combination with other antihypertensive drugs (such as beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, or diuretics). Felodipine reduces the frequency of angina attacks in patients with stable angina. As for the treatment of stable angina, felodipine may be used as monotherapy or in combination with beta-blockers.

Plendil indications:

  • Arterial hypertension (as monotherapy or in combination with other antihypertensive agents, such as beta-blockers, diuretics or ACE inhibitors).
  • Stable angina (as monotherapy or in combination with beta-blockers).
