Oxsoralen: unwanted effects

Oxsoralen therapy may cause the following side effects: vertigo, nervousness, insomnia, depression. Oxsoralen is incompatible with other drugs with photosensitizing effect (dithranol, coal tar, griseofulvin, phenothiazines, nalidixic acid, thiazide derivatives, quinolones, fluoroquinolones, halogen-containing salicylates (bacteriostatic soaps), sulfonamides, tetracyclines, organic dyes (methylene blue, toluidine blue, rose bengal, methyl orange).

It is not advisable to sunbathe for 24 hours prior to Oxsoralen therapy and subsequent phototherapy. Patients are advised to wear sunglasses for 24 hours after taking the drug (to prevent the development of cataracts), and avoid exposure to sunlight for 8 hours.

Patients should wear sunglasses during the photochemotherapy. After the procedure, the patient should also wear sunglasses for 24 hours and avoid exposure to sunlight for 48 hours.
