Naprosyn - what it is

Naprosyn (naproxen) is a nonsteroidal anti-rheumatic drug with anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effect.

Naprosyn indications: primary dysmenorrhea, articular rheumatism, periarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, injuries and inflammatory diseases of soft tissues and musculoskeletal system, gout, osteoarthritis, pain associated with infectious and inflammatory diseases. It is also used as an auxiliary drug in infectious and inflammatory diseases of the upper respiratory tract, adnexitis, primary dysmenorrhea, headache, toothache.

No absolute contraindications are found.

Naprosyn should be avoided in the following disorders: acute gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, attacks of bronchospasm associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, hemorrhagic diathesis, pregnancy and lactation, hypersensitivity to the drug.

It is not recommended to prescribe the drug to children under 16 years of age and patients who have gastrointestinal bleeding. How to take Naprosyn

It is preferable to take the pills at meal times. The drug is prescribed to adults in a daily dose of 500-1000 mg (at the beginning of treatment and in acute conditions) 2 times a day (morning and evening). The maintenance dose is 500 mg daily in 1 or 2 divided doses.

Acute attacks of gout: take 750 mg at once, then 250-500 mg every 8 hours for 2-3 days.

Naprosyn possible side effects

Naprosyn therapy may cause disorders in the form of vomiting, heartburn, nausea, constipation or diarrhea, epigastric pain, headache, impaired concentration, disorientation, depression, blurred vision, allergic reactions, hemorrhage.

Treatment: gastric lavage. Dialysis is ineffective.

Naprosyn specific guidance

Drug interactions

When used with some other drugs, Naprosyn may cause the following effects:

Indirect anticoagulants: Naprosyn may slightly increase their effect.

  • Antacids containing aluminum and magnesium, as well as sodium hydrogen may lead to a reduction of absorption of naproxen.
  • Amoxicillin may lead to nephrotic syndrome.
  • Diazepam may change the pharmacokinetic parameters of naproxen.
  • Acetylsalicylic acid, probenecid may lead to a reduction of naproxen concentration.
  • Methotrexate: naproxen may increase the symptoms of toxicity.
  • Lithium carbonate: naproxen may increase the concentration of lithium.
  • Morphine may cause the symptoms of myoclonus.
  • Naproxen may increase the concentration of prednisolone.
  • Furosemide: the diuretic effect may be reduced.
