Floxin (ofloxacin) is an antimicrobial drug belonging to the fluoroquinolone group.
Floxin is recommended for use in infectious and inflammatory diseases of the following organs and systems: respiratory tract (pneumonia, bronchitis); conditions of the ear, nose, and throat (otitis media, sinusitis, laryngitis, pharyngitis); skin disorders; disorders of the skeletal system (joints and bones); gastrointestinal infections; pyelonephritis and urinary tract (cystitis, urethritis); pelvic organs (salpingitis, oophoritis, endometritis, cervicitis, prostatitis, epididymitis, orchitis). The drug is used to treat gonorrhea, chlamydia, meningitis. It is also used for prevention of infections in patients with impaired immune status (including patients with neutropenia).
Floxin (ofloxacin) contraindications
Absolute contraindications: pregnancy and breastfeeding (lactation); hypersensitivity to ofloxacin or other quinolone derivatives; periods after stroke, traumatic brain injury and inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system (CNS); epilepsy; children and patients under 18 years of age.
The drug should with caution in the case of arteriosclerotic vascular disease, organic CNS lesions, chronic renal failure.

The dosage is determined depending on the severity of the infection and its localization, as well as the general condition of the patient, sensitivity of the microorganisms, and liver and kidney functions. Patients with impaired renal function should reduce the dose by 50% (dosing frequency 2 times a day). Patients on hemodialysis should use ofloxacin at a dose of 0.1 g 1 time per day.
The treatment should be continued for 3 days more after the disappearance of symptoms. Floxin tablets are taken whole with water, before meals or during meals. The recommended dosing regimen for adults – 0.2-0.8 g per day (divided into 2 doses). The basic course of treatment – 7-10 days. In the case of acute gonorrhea, take a single dose of 0.4 g.
Floxin (ofloxacin) side effects
Digestive system: nausea, vomiting, flatulence, diarrhea, anorexia, cholestatic jaundice, abdominal pain, hyperbilirubinemia, pseudomembranous enterocolitis.
CNS: dizziness, headache, convulsions, tremors, nightmares, psychotic reactions, irritability, anxiety, phobias, confusion, depression, hallucinations, increased intracranial pressure, diplopia, distortion of the sense of taste.
Musculoskeletal system: arthralgia, tenosynovitis, myalgia, tendon rupture.
Cardiovascular system: vasculitis, tachycardia.
Skin disorders: petechial hemorrhage, bullous hemorrhagic dermatosis, vasculitis, papular rash.
Hematopoiesis: agranulocytosis, leukopenia, anemia, pancytopenia, thrombocytopenia, aplastic and hemolytic anemia.
Urinary system: hypercreatininemia, acute interstitial nephritis.
Hypersensitivity reactions: itching, skin rash, urticaria, allergic nephritis, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, eosinophilia, angioedema, fever, bronchospasm, Lyell’s syndrome, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, photosensitivity, erythema multiforme; rarely – anaphylaxis.
Other reactions: vaginitis, hypoglycemia (in patients with diabetes), thrombophlebitis.
Floxin (ofloxacin) interaction with other medicinal products
Products containing calcium, magnesium, aluminum and iron salts may reduce the absorption of ofloxacin.
When used with ofloxacin, the dosage of theophylline should be reduced.
Cimetidine, methotrexate, furosemide may increase the concentration of ofloxacin.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), nitroimidazole derivatives and methylxanthines increase the risk of neurotoxic side effects.
Floxin (ofloxacin) warnings and precautions
Floxin tablets are not recommended for the treatment of acute tonsillitis. Do not use the drug for longer than 2 months. It is necessary to avoid exposure to ultraviolet radiation during the whole period of treatment (avoid natural sunlight or artificial UV rays). The drug should be discontinued in case of CNS adverse events, allergic reactions, pseudomembranous colitis.
Women should not use tampons during treatment with ofloxacin (high risk of vaginal candidiasis). Patients need to discontinue therapy at the first signs of tendinitis and immediately consult a podiatrist.
Patients with impaired renal or hepatic function should monitor the concentration of ofloxacin in plasma. The risk of toxic reactions is higher in case of severe hepatic and renal insufficiency (dose reduction is recommended).
It is recommended to avoid taking ethanol (alcohol) during therapy.
The drug is only used in pediatric practice to treat life-threatening severe infections (when it is not possible to use less toxic drugs).
