Famvir (famciclovir) pharmacological action

Famvir (famciclovir) is an antiviral drug. It is active against two types of the herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus and Varicella-zoster virus. Famciclovir inhibits viral DNA replication, but does not cause damage in normal cells.

Famvir significantly reduces pain in postherpetic neuralgia caused by herpes zoster. After oral administration, Famvir is absorbed rapidly and almost completely from the intestinal tract.

Famvir (famciclovir) indications for use

Famvir (famciclovir) is prescribed for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2. It is effective both in case of primary infection and chronic infection (herpes simplex labialis and genital herpes). Famvir is also active against cytomegalovirus and herpes zoster virus, including postherpetic neuralgia with eye complications (ocular herpes).

Famvir (famciclovir) contraindications

The drug is not used in case of famciclovir sensitivity and lactose intolerance. The agent is not used in children under 18 years old.

Famvir (famciclovir) instructions for use

Famvir tablets are taken without chewing. They can be given without regard to meals. It is recommended to start the treatment as early as possible (after first symptoms appear).

In case of herpes zoster, patients with a normal immune status should use 0.5 g three times a day. Duration of the course is 7 days. In the acute phase it is recommended to take 0.25 g 3 times per day or 0.5 g 2 times a day. Duration of the course is 7 days.

Immunosuppressed patients may take 0.5 g 3 times a day during 10 days.

Primary genital herpes in patients with a normal immune status: 0.25 g three times a day for 5 consecutive days. Patients with recurrent herpes labialis: 1.5 g at once or 0.75 g 2 times a day for 1 day.

Herpes labialis and genital herpes in immunosuppressed patients: 0.5 g 3 times a day for 7 days.

Patients with impaired renal function should reduce the dose. Elderly patients do not need to change the dose.

Famvir (famciclovir) common side effects

The following symptoms may occur during Famvir therapy:

Abdominal pain (in patients with low immune system); Itching; Vomiting, nausea; Jaundice; Headache; Hallucinations; Drowsiness; Rash; Erythema multiforme; Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Safety of Famvir (famciclovir) during pregnancy and lactation

No adequate studies have been done in pregnant and lactating women. Therefore, Famvir (famciclovir) is not recommended in pregnancy and lactation.

Famciclovir does not affect sperm morphology and sperm motility.

Famvir (famciclovir) special instructions

Patients should begin treatment as soon as possible.

Caution should be exercised when treating patients with impaired renal function (they may require correction of the dosage regimen).

There are no special precautions for elderly patients.

Patients should avoid sexual intercourse during Famvir therapy.

Famvir should not be used in patients with rare genetic metabolic disorders associated with galactose intolerance, severe lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption.

It is not recommended to use Famvir (famciclovir) in children.

Patients who suffer from dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, or other disorders of the central nervous system should refrain from driving during treatment.
