Diovan (valsartan) indications

Diovan (valsartan) is an antihypertensive agent used to treat hypertension and reduce myocardial hypertrophy. Diovan is helpful for the treatment of chronic heart failure in patients receiving standard therapy including diuretics and ACE inhibitors. It is also used in arterial hypertension, acute myocardial infarction with left ventricular dysfunction.

When you should not use Diovan (valsartan)

Diovan (valsartan) absolute contraindications: pregnancy, breastfeeding (lactation), hypersensitivity to the drug. The drug can be dangerous for the fetus.

Diovan relative contraindications: bilateral renal artery stenosis, low sodium diet, diarrhea, vomiting, hepatic insufficiency associated with biliary obstruction, renal failure (including patients on hemodialysis).

Diovan should not be used in children and adolescents up to 18 years.

Diovan (valsartan) dosage and administration

The tablets should be taken without chewing. The recommended dosing regimen according to disease:

Hypertension: 80 mg 1 time a day, every day (regardless of gender, age and race). The antihypertensive effect is observed in the first two weeks; the maximum effect is observed after 4 weeks. The daily dose of the drug can be increased to 320 mg (if necessary).

Chronic heart failure: initial dose - 40 mg 2 times a day, every day. The dosage should be gradually increased to 80 mg two times a day and up to160 mg 2 times a day in the case of good tolerability. The maximum daily dose is 320 mg, divided into 2 doses.

Patients after myocardial infarction (valsartan therapy should be started within 12 hours after myocardial infarction): the initial dose - 20 mg 2 times a day, up to the dose of 160 mg 2 times a day. The maximum daily dose is 320 mg, divided into 2 doses.

Patients with impaired renal function may not reduce the dose of valsartan.

Information about Diovan (valsartan) side effects

Hematopoietic system: very rarely - thrombocytopenia, neutropenia. Immune system: very rarely - hypersensitivity reactions. Central nervous system (CNS): rarely - headache, vertigo, decreased libido, insomnia. Cardiovascular system (CVS): very rarely - vasculitis, orthostatic hypotension. Digestive system: very rarely - nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea. Respiratory system: cough. Dermatological reactions: very rarely - itching, rash, angioedema. Musculoskeletal system: very rarely - myalgia, arthralgia; rarely - pain in the back. Urinary system: very rarely - renal failure. Infections: very rarely - rhinitis; rarely - infections of the upper respiratory tract, sinusitis, pharyngitis; often - viral infections. Other reactions: rarely - fatigue, edema, asthenia. Diovan overdose may lead to marked reduction in blood pressure. Patients are suggested to induce vomiting (if you have recently taken Diovan).

Diovan (valsartan) cautions

It is recommended to use caution when driving (while on Diovan therapy).

Simultaneous use of Diovan and potassium-sparing diuretics (spironolactone, triamterene, amiloride), potassium salts or formulations containing potassium can lead to high concentration of potassium.

If necessary, Diovan can be used together with the following medicinal substances or agents: warfarin, furosemide, cimetidine, digoxin, hydrochlorothiazide, atenolol and amlodipine.

Diovan is often used in combination with other drugs prescribed after myocardial infarction (thrombolytics, aspirin, beta-blockers and statins).

Note that taking Diovan can affect the kidneys.

Store in a dry, dark place, out of reach of children, at a temperature up to 30° C.

My recovery is going good. I started to use it some months ago and I see some progress. Daily I use 160mg of Diovan and I’m glad that I found this drug. It took to me very long time to find the right dosage. At the beginning I hated this drug because the dosage was very high and I have had a lot of different side effects that made me feel very sick. I also take other med such as hydrochlorot 13mg one a day. This drug helps me to avoid any high spikes between different dosages. After some weeks of administration of Diovan my doctor said that my blood levels started to stabilize and my body started to accept the dosage of 160mg per day. It’s very important to find the right dose for you. My doctor said that it differ from one to another. My friend also started to use Diovan but for example 160mg are too much for her. When I just started to use Diovan my blood pressure suddenly spike from 200 to 300 and this was because of the wrong dosage.

my blood pressure has been enormously lowered after I started to take Diovan but it also seems to have some side effects such as back pains, joint aches and fatigue related to this drug. I have been on Toprol XL and I liked it pretty much but later I have developed a bad cough from it so I didn’t had other option but discontinuing using it. I have been on Norvasc as well but it caused me a lot of swelling in my lower extremities so I had to discontinue using it as well. I guess that the Diovan is the best medication out of them so far but I really want to know if there’s a way to get rid of my back and joint pains. I started to noticed them soon after using Diovan so by all means I think that this is a side effect of it. I have also gained at least 10 pounds since I am on this medication so it’s also not making me happy but it works very well so I’m doubtless what should I do now. I have pretty disturbing side effects but it dropped the systolic pressure from 240 to 130 and these are the best results I have had which is pretty impressive for me. I have taken this drug for a couple of months and I wonder if with time the side effects would start to subside or if they would become even more severe. I guess time knows everything..

i’m suffering from high blood pressure. since i was diagnosed with this disease i was like a testing animal because doc tried A LOT OF different blood pressure medication that did not worked on me. this scenario ended when d finally tried diovan. the rest of those drugs i’ve tried prior to this one either did not work for me at all or the side effects were way too severe to take it further. there was a time when i was thinking that there’s nothing in this world that can help me. plus i was very frustrated that doc was playing with me and my disease. i told him long time ago to start giving me the “heavy artillery” because i’m sick of feeling so sick! yeah, i do agree with other comments saying that this drug is very expensive but it works so no money is worth my health. not so long ago my medical provider told me that i should start taking cozaar because it is cheaper and they no longer can cover the cost of diovan so i should stop taking it. i refused and i’ve told them that it doesn’t matter if i have to pay it for myself but i will stay on diovan because it’s the only medication that can help me. i will see if they will cover at least a part of it but there’s no chance of me switching from diovan to any other drug! i do understand that money can be a problem for many of us (as it is for me) but i recommend this drug for those to whom high blood pressure is a real pain in the @ss. there is no other better medication and i do know this for sure!

I have high blood pressure so was on this drug for 3 years. Initially it lowered my blood pressure normally without any bad effects but later it didn’t work as good so the doctors had to increase the dosage to 80 mcg about a little less than one year ago. As soon as the dosage was increased I have started to feel worse and worse with each week. I started to develop back pains and then I could feel pains in my muscles and in my joints. Whenever I was exercising, it was followed by 3 days of really sore muscles. My situation was getting too bad and I couldn’t just leave it like that. Went to my doctor telling him about my problems (sore joints, muscles and back) and he only replied that perhaps I should stop exercising. This made me really angry. Few days later when I already couldn’t resist the pains I went to another doctor who ran several blood tests and made a liver function test. The results came bad and the doctor said that I should stop taking diovan immediately. I was taking ibuprofen while I was on diovan in order to deal with the pain but within 2 days when I stopped taking diovan I also stopped taking ibuprofen. I was able to walk without pains, I could feel that my back and my shoulders started to heal and I started to feel overall better. I was able again to exercise without being followed by pains 3 days. Later when I had a liver test doc said that it is better. I just hope that my liver isn’t permanently damaged and it would heal over some time. I’m off this medication for several months and I’m feeling better but I should stopped taking this medication as soon as I noticed that something is wrong. Too bad that I’ve waited too long. My recommendation to you is to keep running liver function tests if you are on this drug for more than one year.

I don’t take any more blood pressure medicines! They all only seem to cause side effects and no anything else. I don’t understand why drug companies and doctors are keeping pushing this horrific drug! I also don’t understand what is doing FDA about this? Where are looking these people? I was taking other blood pressure medicines for few months (like Accupril) and side effects are impossible to deal! A little more than 2 months ago I was told to take 320 mg per day of Diovan and I took it. About a week ago I FINALLY decided to stop taking it and in general to stop taking any kind of medications because they all seems one worse than another. Now I’m still suffering from those side effects even though a week already passed. They seem to lessen day by day but what would happen if I would take this Diovan for one year or even more?? I would want to know how much it needs to completely get out of my body.. I’m not recommending this drug to anyone, it just poisoned me! Here is the list of the side effects I suffered and still have them (while taking the drug all these side effects were extreme): trouble to focus, blurred vision, dry mouth, neck and joint pains, dry cough and overall feeling of weakness in the body. Please, avoid taking this drug!

For about 2 months, I’m taking this Diovan medication 160mg per day for my high blood pressure disease. The drug works well for my disease compared to others that I was told to take prior to Diovan. However, I would not recommend it. Yes, it may be easy to use and it may be very effective directly on the disease I have, but the severe side effects I have experienced are too big of a risk to continue taking it. Few days after taking it, I had experienced severe shortness of breath that scared me out, short lasting but frequent dizziness and fatigue. In addition, I had heart palpitations out of nothing and muscle weakness. The worst part was those “asthma attacks” and I have to be concerned if won’t experience another attack soon. Currently I’m trying to search for another drug that works as good as this one but without such severe side effects. Whoever wants to try Diovan, take extra care of the side effects!
