Cefzil (cefprozil) pharmacologic effect

Cefzil (cefprozil) is a semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic. Cefprozil is active against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Aerobic gram-positive organisms: Staphylococcus aureus. Cefprozil has no activity against methicillin-resistant staphylococci.

Aerobic gram-negative organisms: Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis. Cefprozil is inactive against Enterococcus faecium, Acinetobacter baumannii, Morganella morganii, Enterobacter species, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia spp., Bacteroides spp.

Cefzil (cefprozil) dosing and administration

Adults and children over 13 years:

Upper respiratory tract infections: pharyngitis and tonsillitis - 500 mg every 24 hours; sinusitis - 250 mg every 12 hours, moderate and severe forms of sinusitis - 500 mg every 12 hours.

Lower respiratory tract infections: the recommended dose for bronchitis and pneumonia is 500 mg every 12 hours.

Skin infections: uncomplicated infections - 250 mg every 12 hours or 500 mg every 24 hours (500 mg every 12 hours if necessary).

Acute urinary tract infections, including acute cystitis: the recommended dose is 500 mg every 24 hours.

The duration of treatment is 7 days. The course of treatment can be extended to 10 days in patients with infections caused by beta-hemolytic streptococci.

Side effects of Cefzil (cefprozil)

Cefzil (cefprozil) is usually well tolerated. Only about 2% of patients may stop the therapy as a result of adverse reactions: diarrhea, nausea, colitis (including pseudomembranous colitis), rash, hives, dizziness, leukopenia, eosinophilia, genital pruritus and vaginitis.

Rare adverse reactions: vomiting and abdominal pain, cholestatic jaundice, hyperactivity, headache, nervousness, insomnia, drowsiness, anaphylaxis, angioedema, erythema multiforme, fever, Steven-Johnson syndrome, thrombocytopenia.

Contraindications to the use of Cefzil (cefprozil)
