Clinical studies have proven the efficacy of nitazoxanide against parasitic infections caused by Entamoeba histolytica, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris spp., Ancyclostoma spp., Strongyloides spp. and several other pathogens (protozoa and helminths).

Nitazoxanide prevents tubulin polymerization in worms. It works by fighting with certain protozoa that cause diarrhea.

When should I use Alinia (nitazoxanide)?

Alinia (nitazoxanide) is recommended in the treatment of amoebic dysentery, giardiasis and helminth infections caused by Enterobius vermicularis, Ascaris lumbricoides, Strongyloides stercoralis, Trichuris trichura and Hymenolepis nana. Alinia is also used in the treatment of infections caused by Blastocystis hominis, Balantidium coli, Isospora belli and diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum (except for patients suffering from immunodeficiency).

Alinia (nitazoxanide) dosage

Typically, Alinia (nitazoxanide) is taken within three days, during the meals, with an interval of 12 hours. Patients should drink a sufficient amount of liquid during treatment.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, do not take another tablet and simply continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once, more often or in a different way than prescribed by your doctor.

The drug is available as tablets and suspension.

What are the side effects for Alinia (nitazoxanide)?

Typically, Alinia (nitazoxanide) affects the digestive system, causing abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. There may be headaches, nausea, dizziness, indigestion, cough, allergic reactions (such as hives).

Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms worsen or do not go away: severe abdominal pain, headache, stomach upset, vomiting, and discolored urine.

Some side effects can be extremely severe. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately: skin rash, itching.

It is not recommended to use Alinia in patients who suffer from renal or hepatic insufficiency. Also, do not take the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Patients with individual intolerance to nitazoxanide should not use Alinia.

Patients with diabetes need to know that Alinia (nitazoxanide) suspension contains sucrose (1.48 g of sucrose per 5 mL).
