Aggrenox (aspirin/dipyridamole) interaction with other drugs

Be careful when using Aggrenox in combination with acetylsalicylic acid or with warfarin. Acetylsalicylic acid may enhance the effect of anticoagulants and drugs that inhibit platelet aggregation. The use of Aggrenox may increase the risk of side effects affecting the gastrointestinal tract.

Combination of dipyridamole and acetylsalicylic acid does not increase the incidence of bleeding.

In a joint application of dipyridamole and warfarin, the incidence and severity of bleeding was no more than the introduction of only one warfarin.

Dipyridamole may increase the hypotensive effect of drugs that lower blood pressure and, as a result, may worsen the symptoms of myasthenia gravis.

The effects of hypoglycaemic agents can be stronger when combined with acetylsalicylic acid.

Simultaneous administration of ibuprofen in patients with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease may limit the beneficial effect of aspirin on the cardiovascular system.

Aggrenox should be used with caution in patients taking drugs that increase the risk of bleeding (platelet aggregation inhibitors, ticlopidine and clopidogrel).

What are possible side effects for Aggrenox (aspirin/dipyridamole)?

The drug can be taken with caution in I and II trimesters of pregnancy or during lactation.

Possible side effects may include hypersensitivity reactions (rash, urticaria, severe bronchospasm, angioedema). In very rare cases, low blood platelet count (thrombocytopenia) may occur after ingestion of acetylsalicylic acid.

The drug may cause vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, nausea, headaches, hypotension, hot flushes and tachycardia (especially at the beginning of treatment). These symptoms generally disappear during long-term use of the drug.

In rare cases acetylsalicylic acid may cause epigastric pain, gastric ulcer or duodenal ulcer and erosive gastritis that can lead to serious gastrointestinal bleeding.

One thing I need to tell you about this drug is that you need to BEWARE of it. since a TIA one year ago I have been using this drug and for the entire year I was suffering from very bad and uncontrolled blood pressure that was including orthostatic hypotension too (it is low blood pressure upon exercise or standing about 90 / 35. Besides I was also suffered from syncope passing out. Prior to the TIA I was taking Norvasc and Cozaar but while and after I was taking the drug my blood pressure was extremely low, in fact it was so low that I no longer ever took any of those drugs. Later I have found out that this drug has dipyridamole and aspirin in it. I went to a pharmacist and he told me that dipyridamole is an anti platelet sticking medications. actually, later when I searched more a bit I found out that this is a vasodilator and it can cause some light headedness that is a result of a extremely low blood pressure upon you’re standing in the elderly. I regret that I have taken this Aggrenox because I am now feeling that I’ve lost one year of recovery because I wasn’t able to exercise because of a such low blood pressure. Obviously I was trying to do something about it and I have searched for physical therapists but they were USELSS. All of them. they were all afraid to work with my condition and I consider that all the doctors are useless. Shame on all of them. I have also searched for help from local pharmacists but they were useless too. I have stopped to take this drug for about half a month or so and since then it seems that my blood pressure is slowly slowly becoming more and more stable and I have started back on the blood pressure drugs. Currently I am using Plavix and I really hope that it would help me much more than Aggrenox did because it is a very bad drug, at least for me. I really hope that this would help and if you intend taking this drug make sure that at least, you have a good doctor.
